I was thoroughly
intrigued by the pigeon experiment that was used in the Coast Guard. It had never occurred to me how useful their
eyesight could be because of the fact that they are a different species. This example of behaviorism shows how
psychology can be utilized in order to help humans by incorporating the special
features of certain animals. Additionally,
I enjoyed this experiment because as far as I know, none of the animals were
harmed. They were simply awarded food
for their obedience and for their spectacular eyesight.
I think
that the use of animals in experiments can be completely justifiable as long as
the safety of the animals is protected, I only wish that regulations to ensure
animal safety had been instituted earlier.
The current safety regulations ensure that animals will be well taken
care of, but not that they are given a choice.
Although I would rather have a rat die than a human being, I hope that
psychologists find a way to give the animals a choice on indulging in an
experiment.
As for the
ethical considerations in psychological research, I think that the human morals
must always remain intact. Baumrind
stated that when people are given false information that they are deprived of their rights as
volunteers. Agreeing with Baumrind, I
think that participants must be given informed consent, along with debriefing. Deceiving members of psychological studies is
immoral and goes against humankind to test an experiment.
Torture is
extremely different from interviews. Torture
demands answers and will stop at nothing to receive those answers. Interviews are a simple question and answer session
where harmful measures, whether it be emotional or physical, are not taken. However, they do have certain similarities.
They both attempt to reveal information about certain subjects and they both
require at least two people to conduct.
Torture is not moral, or legal, in any sense and I believe that every
person has the right to remain free of torture, no matter the act.
I also enjoyed hearing about the pigeon experiment. In this case, the animals weren't just a simple "Guinea pig" for the experiment, they were a tool to help humans in something that we don't have the ability to do.
ReplyDeleteI would like to ask you how you plan to get animals to have knowledge of and agree to an experiment. The science that would be necessary to do this will never be reached in our life time especially if we do not give scientists full authority and discretion in their experiments without regulation. I would also like to point out your mistake by saying torture is illegal. This in true in America but I implore you to learn information vital to national security and travel to Iran or North Korea and commit multiple war acts.

You bring up a good point that they both extract information from others and it exemplifies the fact that there can be more than one way to do something.
ReplyDeleteSkiljan, Goebel poses the same question that i may also ask in how you might obtain the agreement from an animal for an experiment. Also, torture in my opinion slightly conflicts with your in that yes i am against it but if it involves a threat to national security and can guarantee the safety of our nation than it should be used. I also like your level of curiosity towards the pigeon concept with the Coast Guard, it is interesting how we in fact use the pigeons in such a way that conflicts not one bit of harm to them but takes one of their strongest attributes and uses it to provide safety for others.

ReplyDeleteWhile I think it is known that is disheartening to kill anything, I wholeheartedly concur that it's better to experiment and accidentally kill a rat than a human with goals and aspirations. And, while it is sad that a rat can't deny testing, it's better for us to start small and plentiful than large and valuable, as life goes.
